KATHMANDU: In response to curb the increasing illegal poaching of the wildlife in the nation the Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today called the security forces chiefs and high level officials from the ministries of forest, home and defence.
In last 11 months 28 rhinos have reportedly have died in Chitwan national park, home to nation’s largest rhino population. According to the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation, 13 rhinos were poached, 13 died naturally, while the reason for the death of remaining two is shrouded in mystery. Three rhinos were killed last week and the authorities have failed to nab the culprits.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Forest and Soil Conservation Deepak Bohara, Chief Secretary Madhav Prasad Ghimire, Forest Secretary Yubraj Bhusal, Home Secretary Dr Govinda Prasad Kusum, Defence Secretary Naveen Kumar Ghimire, Chief of the Army Chhatra Man Gurung, Inspector General of Armed Police Force Sanat Kumar Basnet, Inspector General of Police Ramesh Chand Thakuri and the representatives from the National Trust for Nature Conservation and World Wildlife Fund Nepal.
“The army chief accepted that the reason for rising number of rhino deaths is security lapses in park territory. He committed to punishing army officials handling the wildlife directorate in the headquarters, as well as the battalion in the Chitwan National Park,”said a source who attended the meeting held in PM’s office. Later in the evening the Nepal Army directorate of public relations told THT it had formed a four-member court of inquiry led by Brig Gen Yagya Bikram Rana to probe into rhino poaching in CNP, where more than 900 army personnel have been deployed.
The PM called all the authorities concerned to stop the blame game and coordinate better to save the endangered species.
Deepak Bohara said, “The high-level meeting was purposed by his ministry to take quick decision to curb the problem.”
The prime minister had also directed the chief secretary to decide on the formation of the Wild life Crime Control Bureau under the high-level committee on wildlife crime control committee formed under the chairmanship of the prime minister a few months ago.”The file has already been submitted to cabinet and prime minister had directed to finalise it instantly,”said Gopal Prasad Upadhyay, Director General, DNPWC.
DNPWC met members of CNP buffer zone management committee this morning and decided to mobilise youths as informers. “Up to 50 of them will be recruited. Their salary expenses will be shared equally by the government and the buffer zone management committee,” added Upadhyay.
According to Bohara, the meeting will continue tomorrow and representatives of finance ministry will also be there.
Lekhanath Municipality and Health Education and Agriculture Support Centre killed more than one hundred dogs feeding poisonous meat in Lekhanath Municipality Sisuwa on last Thursday and Friday. Animal Rights Nepal and HART protested against the killing of dogs and requested Lekhanath Municipality and Health Education and Agriculture Support Centre to stop killing stray dogs. “Stray dogs create disturbance to the pedestrians and the non-vaccinated dogs tend to attack and bite people so, we killed the dogs,” said Lekhanath Municipality officer Ram Mani Adhikari. “Street dogs might be infected with rabies and pose dangers to the people and other animals so we have no other option officer Adhikari adds.
After protest, the ARN and HART Lekhanath Municipality officer Adhikari said that was against the animal rights and rights to live dogs so they stopped killing dog. Next time we will not repeat this mistake, Said Adhikari. People are against killing dogs feeding them poison. Navaraj Sapkota said that killing street dogs without conducting proper tests for rabies should be stopped. “Killing animals in such a cruel manner is a crime” said Hari Adhakri, a resident of Lekhanath Municipality Khudi. Animal also have rights to live in this beautiful earth. Nepal Government should make policy for animal rights.

KATHMANDU, Feb 16: After nine years of turning a blind eye to illegal parahawking business flourishing in Pokhara, forest officials have finally geared up for an outright ban on all parahawking activities run by British national Scott Mason.
Mason, who is running the business in the name of bird rescue and rehabilitation, is in possession of five Black Kites (Milvus migrans) and two Egyptian vultures (Neophron percnopterus), which are included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2006 and 2009, respectively. He also has two Steppe Eagles at present. The case was revealed by myrepublica.com on February 1.
“We will take action against all those involved in parahawking and free the birds,” Kaski District Forest Officer Bissu Babu Tiwari told myrepublica.com on Monday.
Tiwari also said the operators, who own Himalayan Raptor Rescue, had some time ago sought permission for carrying forward the business. “Some people came to me asking for license to run the rehabilitation center. But we cannot provide them that as there is no record of rehabilitation of any bird by the organization,” Tiwari added.
He said no bird/animal can be kept in custody without obtaining license from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation. He, however, said the District Forest Office was “unaware” of the illegal activities through all these years.
Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Deepak Bohara, too, has said that the illegal operation “will be banned.”
“We will stop Mason and keep the birds elsewhere, most probably at Godavari,” Bohara told myrepublica.com.
Animal rights groups and conservationists, on the other hand, have called for an immediate action but have said that the rescued birds should not be freed in the wild at once.
WWF-Nepal´s Diwakar Chapagain said WWF will support the authorities in this regard.
“The authorities who should have long banned parahawking must at least now take immediate actions to stop Mason and take charge of the birds in his possession,” Manoj Gautam, a conservationist, said.

POKHARA: In a bid to prevent further spread of bird flu, 11,000 birds, including 9,817 chickens, 379 ducks and 43 pigeons, were killed in Pokhara today. According to the Bird Flu Prevention Desk at the District Livestock Office, the government will provide compensation for the killed fowls.
Dr Amar Shah said a rapid response team had destroyed 37 kilograms of chicken, 1,370 eggs and 1,183 kg of poultry feed in the affected area. The official said they were checking whether anybody had hidden their fowls. Clearing cages and spreading pesticides are said to start soon.
Dr Shah warned all to stay alert since the dangerous disease had spread over a wider geography. There has, however, been no human casualty so far in the region. The symptoms of a bird flu infection are difficulty in respiration, headache, burning sensation in the throat and high fever.
Meanwhile, Western Regional Hospital (WRH) in Pokhara is prepared to treat patients in case of a bird flu outbreak among humans. Dr Ashok Chaurasiya, director, WRH, said the health facility was capable of tackling the dangerous disease.
Butchers in the area said consumers of poultry products had not decreased significantly in number in Gharipatan despite its declaration as an avian-flu affected zone. Per kg price of chicken however fell Rs 100 to 230 a week after the news of the outbreak.
According to entrepreneurs, about 8,000 birds are consumed in Pokhara daily. An estimated Rs 150 million has been invested in poultry farming in Pokhara.
According to a local people Gyan bahadur jalari, the vultures fed on a carcass of a mule and finished their meal in a matter of minutes.
As Vultures feed on carrion, they are considered to be of great importance to the environment. Prof of Geography at Prithvi Narayan Campus, Dr Krishan KC said the future of the Vultures had been in danger after people started burying the carcasses of animals instead of throwing it away as animal carcass is the main food of vultures. He added programmes should be brought out of conservation of vulture. Vultures play a major role in environment conservation by preying on dead animals. However, eating animals that had died after consuming poison had proven to be fatal for vultures.
The future of vultures was also endangered due to medicines used in domestic cattle as they die after feeding on cattle that were fed a medicine called Diclofenac, Birds Conservation Nepal Chief Executive Officer Dr Hum Bahadur Gurung said. However, Diclofenac was banned in Nepal and a safer substitute, Meloxicam, was found, which won’t be as harmful to the vultures.
Organisations like Nepal’s Bird Conservation have been working proactively in monitoring the ban, educating farmers and cattle owners about the use of Meloxicam, and in setting up vulture restaurants (where birds can feed safely on healthy meat put out by restaurant owers) in Nawalparasi, Rupandehi, Dang and Kaski. Eight species of vultures are found in Nepal.
The restaurent is formally opening on January 18, 2010 at Ghachwok village. For the existence of vultures, it is important to provide them fresh and healthy meat, said Birds Conservation Nepal Chief Executive Officer Dr Hum Bahadur Gurung. According to him, this restaurant will be run by local community.
Eight species of vultures are found in Nepal, the white-rumped and slender-billed vultures are categorized as critically endangered. The numbers of both species have plunged in Nepal and India and scientists say the decline is largely due to farmers dosing their cattle with diclofenac, a drug used to treat inflammation, poisoning the scavenging birds.
All eight species vultures which are found Nepal are found in Pokhara valley so it is good news restaurant for vultures is open in pokhara Animal Rights Nepal founder Krishna Mani Baral said.
Studies have found that last 15 years 95 percent of South Asia’s vulture population has vanished. The fall in their population has been linked to an anti-inflammatory drug used by farmers to treat livestock. Residues of the drug in animal carcasses poisoned the vultures in large numbers.
