Endangered animals limiting to cages

By Krishna Mani Baral

Most of the animals enlisted on the endangered list are nowadays limiting to the cages and zoos in the cities far away from their natural habitat.

The lack of natural shelter and ignorance of people towards animal conservation has meant that these endangered species of animals are caged as show-piece items in the zoos in the name of protecting some of the last of their kind.
Many of the endangered animals of Nepal also face extinction owing to lack of proper conservation strategies. Poaching of these rare and extremely endangered species for the sake of their precious fur and skin is on the rise. The extinction of these rare animal species due to lack of conservation is a serious challenge for everyone. The existence of many of rare animal species found in Nepal including the one-horned rhinoceros, tigers, lions and cheetahs is under serious threat by the ever prevalent poaching activities in the country.

The protection of these highly endangered animals, which are as big a part of the ecosystem as we humans, is the need of the hour. So, let us all be aware of the need to protect the existence of these endangered animals and direct our efforts for their protection on time. Let’s save these animals from the fate of the dodo.
